Simone entered geometry as a Freshman, without a complete background in algebra. As we worked through her homework, we used both the My Jungle Math and Fundamental Algebra workbooks to catch her up to grade level. At Seattle University, Simone bravely took the math courses she needed to fulfill her math requirements, and is now majoring in Psychology. She plans on studying for several weeks in Europe, as part of her university curriculum. Simone also loves to sing.
Dylan was a Freshman taking algebra , trying to catch up after an illness. I taught him classical algebra, and he (re)taught me graphing, which he excelled at. Once he reached geometry, he was in his element. Dylan received a scholarship to Pepperdine University, and has completed 3 semesters, the last in Argentina, where he studied South American History.
“I love the culture of Latin America, including its people, environment, food, music, art, and history. I am especially interested in the history of Latin America before Spain came and colonized the continent."
Shoshana was studying for a make-up exam in Algebra 1. At the time I was taking Intermediate Algebra at the local Community College, to refresh my skills, and was shocked to see that her freshman algebra in high school covered some of the same material, but less in depth. Becoming a student again gave me more insight into the frustration of not getting math, when you are excelling at all other subjects. Shoshana studies at College of Marin.
Chiara travelled with her Grandpa all the way from school in Larkspur for tutoring on her way home to Novato. Her friendly and adventuresome spirit has carried her to Mt Zion National Park (again with Grandpa) and Hawaii with Mom. She responded well to the patterns of math, and was soon on her way to catching up with her pre-algebra class. We color-coded exponents, played Factor Bingo, and she taught Grandpa the things she learned. Now she drives Grandpa, since she got her license.
Steve is an accomplished guitarist and saxophone player. The math he learned helped him grasp music theory, so that he could write his own music, and be truly creative. After a three year stint with a band in Los Angeles, Steve is now eager to teach guitar and music theory to local students who are serious about learning their instrument.
August was my “Student of the Month” as a 5th Grader who needed to catch up mathematically with his new school. He received an award as “Most Improved Student”, and went on to excel in all his subjects, especially science. As a High School Senior, he is weighing the universities to which he applied, and may choose the University of Vermont.
Wyatt was in pre-algebra in middle school, when his parents asked me to help challenge him to excel in math. He was always alert and ready to learn every new concept, including my method for finding the square root of large numbers, (without a calculator). Wyatt has followed his family tradition as a long distance runner, but also followed his love for mountain biking, where he is captain of his team. He is also an accomplished auto mechanic and has been accepted to an Automotive School in Kansas upon graduation from High School. This gifted and motivated young man also plays guitar.
Elycia found 3rd Grade math a bit overwhelming, and was willing to spend some of her summer vacation getting ready for the next grade. By mid-4th grade, she was working out all her own problems, with me to check for accuracy (something our public schools no longer do.) A great reader and delightful person, Elycia conquered her math fears, and is now excelling in 5th Grade math at a public international school in Montreal, where Mom is a University professor.
Life is a journey and math is only a part of it. Where will you be in several years?
